Evaluation of the Late Seed-coat Darkening of Carioca Type Dry Beans
INTRODUCTION Most of the dry beans grown in Brazil are of the carioca grain type, that is, cream color and beige streaks. Among the characteristics associated with the carioca grain type, the lightest possible cream color is highly desirable. Recently, a carioca cultivar was identified which has a very light grain color and, in addition, it maintains this phenotype for some time; i.e., the grai...
متن کاملESTIMATES OF GENETIC PARAMETERS OF LATE SEED-COAT DARKENING OF CARIOCA TYPE DRY BEANS Estimativas de parâmetros genéticos do caráter escurecimento tardio dos grãos de feijão carioca
In order to facilitate commercialization of cultivars of carioca type dry beans, the grains must have the lightest possible cream color and this phenotype must be persistent (late seed-coat darkening). There are reports of genetic variability for this trait. The objectives of this study were to obtain information regarding genetic control of the trait, with emphasis on the estimate of heritabil...
متن کاملSelection aiming at upright growth habit common bean with carioca type grains
Genetic improvement of common bean, along with the incorporation of technologies and investment in the productive sector has stimulated the grain yield in Brazil to an increase of about 45% in the last 15 years (Conab 2005). However, the pressure to achieve more productive lines, associated to the needs for headway in management and regarding consumer demands in relation to grain type is on the...

متن کاملSeed Coat Integrity: Seed Characteristics and Micro-structure of Seed Coats Resistant to Mechanical Damage of Common Bean {phaseolus Vulgaris L.)
Common beans {Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are consumed by humans in various fonns of food, mostly processed for baked bean. Therefore, seed coat integrity (high quality wholesome bean) of beans is extremely important. Split beans and cracked seed coats of white beans result in substantial problems in processing. Our first study showed variety differences in response to direct combine harvest (Gillar...
